What Is a Sociopath (or Psychopath)?

A socio- or psychopath isn’t what you probably think.

While many serial killers may qualify as psychopaths, the vast majority of psychopaths do not have a history of torturing small animals or stashing cadavers in their freezers or under the floorboards. Neither violence nor bloodlust is among psychopaths’ defining characteristics.

The terms sociopath and psychopath—which are often used interchangeably—are applied less to a strict set of personality traits than to a number of distinct behavioral tendencies (which may be acquired or genetic—or both), including ruthlessness, egocentricity, glibness/superficial charm, impulsiveness, manipulativeness/cunning, a lack of remorse, and a parasitic lifestyle (that is, an inclination to feed off of others like fleas or leeches).

Psychopaths are users whose moral development may be called deficient or arrested.

Most people would equate the absence of empathy or social conscience with criminality. But psychopaths may just as likely be heads of industry, politicians, surgeons, lawyers, scientists, or even religious leaders as snake oil salesmen or felons. An Oxford don, Kevin Dutton, recently published a book titled, The Wisdom of Psychopaths.

Professor Dutton notes that driven self-preoccupation, social disinhibition, and unscrupulousness can be very rewarding as measured by popular standards of success and accomplishment (for example, the accumulation of wealth and power). I don’t know that Donald Trump is a psychopath, but I don’t know that he isn’t, either.

So what does this excursion into the psychopathic personality have to do with the malicious abuse of restraining orders? Psychopaths are exploiters, and the restraining order process is one that’s ripe for exploitation. Because the standards of proof required to substantiate restraining order allegations are so lax, restraining orders are excellent tools of social and political manipulation and dominance. And manipulation and dominance are psychopaths’ tradecraft.

To the psychopath, other people are either tools or obstacles. A person who has no utility as an instrument is worthless—or worse, an impediment. A person whom a psychopath views as an obstacle is a person to eliminate, and restraining orders are very effective at crippling opponents, including rivals and other potential threats to the psychopath’s image, ambitions, or prosperity.

Because the restraining order was conceived as a means to encourage victims of abuse to come forward who would otherwise be too timid to, the standard of proof applied to their applicants’ allegations is minimal to none. And restraining orders are awarded based solely on the word of their petitioners. The truth of their allegations is virtually taken for granted by the court (especially when claimants are female). For those who are all but devoid of moral compunction then—that is, people who lie unhesitantly and without remorse—manipulation of restraining orders is a trip to Disneyland.

Psychopaths are statistical anomalies. Fortunately for the rest of us, they’re a rare breed. It’s likely that most of the thousands to tens of thousands of people who’ve been urged to visit this blog by fraudulent allegations made against them on restraining orders are victims of garden variety spite or vengeance. But many have clearly recognized that the people who’ve upended their lives are morally subnormal, sometimes to an extreme.

These people may well be psychopaths.

  1. Do you want to know what my ex wife’s false allegations have done to me? I mean besides ruin my life revoking my top secret security clearance being fired and not being able to get a job cleaning fucking toilets. Losing my right to the second amendment one that I fought for on four separate occasions. I don’t even want to say the number of flags I had to drape over coffins. Oh but the MOST important losing my rights to be a father to my kids. My two boys are the literal meaning of my life… after personally handing a folded flag to multiple children of fallen heroes you will quickly understand how important your children are too you I’m sobbing uncontrollably just thinking about it. But I digress… what these allegations have done to me is turn me into a sociopath who only wants revenge and to see that cheating whore get what she FKing deserves… never in our 12 year marriage have I laid a hand on her or my boys I can count on ONE hand how many times I had to spank those boys… I am having a very hard time containing this rage and hatred for her the things I find myself thinking of even frightens me. I can’t tell you how much of a chump I was and feel like for trying to “save” our marriage when that witch had ZERO intentions of doing the same. The text of them laughing at my expense. The details of the act and the sexting. Then for some dipshit fat FK commissioner to GRANT this DVPO with ZERO evidence no police reports no medical reports no PHOTOS lied under oath several times he say”I find her credible” holy fuck my neck is hot

    Dear Stacy,
I know exactly how you feel.Though there is nothing I can do and little I can say to ease your pain…at least we can take some comfort in finding a blog such as this one so as to see that we are quite far from alone. We are actually the victims of a legal epidemic!

  3. An impassioned researcher (likely a victim, of course) has culled various online “clippings” about this subject and posted them here (more power to her): “Victims of Narcissistic Abuse – NPD – Sociopath – Psychopath Help Guide.” FYI.

  4. In 2009 my cop sister and mother filed a false R/O or PFA against me. I have still not recovered from this false allegation. I lost my job, my home and my health was already in jeopardy and has since deteriorated. The really sad part, is that my daughter was 13 years old at the time (I’m an only parent) Her life was turned upside down and she has not seen any justice for her. My cop sister actually told my daughter “I’ve been trained on how to take your mother out” needless to say my daughter has been traumatized. I look like a crazy paranoid drama queen, because my friends and acquaintances have some family dysfunction, but not to this degree. No one seems to believe you and the attorneys just look at R/O’s PFA’s as minor nuisance type filings that you either win or lose. The long term affects are incredibly devastating to someone and no repercussions to the false accuser’s life. (I have 2 sisters and 3 brothers) 3 of them want me to die or kill me.) Shattered but still standing.

    • Sorry for the belated reply, Stacy. I’m sorry, and I know exactly what you mean, and this kind of thing shouldn’t be as easy to get away with as it is. Your diagnosis of how these things are viewed by the court and its officers is exactly right. Needless to say they have no concept of what it is to be on the receiving end.
